Our Goal:
Haynsworth’s K-4 Program is based on a fundamental approach to the basics of learning. The combination of the whole language and phonetic approaches gives the child the steppings stones to reading development. Children have hands-on opportunities with educational manipulatives and practice in writing. Haynsworth is a nurturing and supportive environment that promotes responsibility, decision-making and cooperative social skills.
Our Learning Approach:
Young children learn through hands-on interaction with manipulatives and other appropriate materials. Our learning approach meets the needs of young children by providing for and fostering their sense of wonder and curiosity, and allowing the child to investigate and interact at his/her own speed and developmental level. Centers encourage investigation and also give children many opportunities to work independently and to make choices. We maintain a 15:1 student/teacher ratio.
Benchmarks for Readiness:
- Follows simple directions
- Exhibits self-control
- Recognizes numerals 1-10, counts to 20
- Recognizes basic colors and shapes
- Recognizes upper case letters out of sequence
- Recognizes and prints first name
Language Art and Pre-Reading Development:
The K-4 curriculum is theme-based with the basics of phonetics. Each week has a theme with a letter and a number. The children learn through listening, writing and an exploration of educational centers. The goal is for each child to have a successful transition into the K-5 program based on their recognition of upper and lower case letters, sounds of beginning consonants and a basic sight-word vocabulary.
Pre-Math Development:
The K-4 Pre-Math program is a development of basic mathematical concepts using the calendar, manipulatives and writing. The children learn to count, recognize and write numbers. They learn to sort, compare and classify objects, complete sets, weight and volume. They also begin the concept of adding single digits up to nine.
Science:
The children have opportunities for hands-on experiences with activities related to weather, seasons, the five senses, living and non-living things and much more.
Foreign Language:
Our students begin to learn the Spanish language through familiar songs, stories and physical activities in the classroom under the direction of a trained Spanish teacher.
Enrichment:
Haynsworth builds upon the basic foundation of learning with hands-on programs in Art and Music. Children are engaged in fun and stimulating art and music classroom activities to provide them with basic skills and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of the arts.
Hours:
K-4 hours are from 8:30 am to 12 noon. A Late Stay Program is available for before and after school.
