Haynsworth Elementary Program
Grades 1-2
Admissions
Entrance into grades 1 - 2 is based on a satisfactory parent and child interview by the Director and satisfactory test results. An entrance test is required enabling the school to assess each student for appropriate academic placement.
Testing
National Standard Achievement Tests are administered in the spring.
Other Information
Each student is required to have a South Carolina Certificate of Immunization. Other information pertinent to the child's physical and emotional development should be filed with the school. The registration process includes completion of application and payment of enrollment fee; entrance test appropriate for grade level, conference and test evaluation with the school.
Curriculum
A scholastic program using State approved texts provides a foundation of reading, phonics, language, spelling, science, math and social studies, supplemented by enrichment programs for students working above grade level. Haynsworth builds upon the basic foundation with classes in:
Foreign Language: Spanish
Computer
A computer science program enables students to become familiar with important computer concepts appropriate to each grade level. Each classroom contains its own computer lab area.
Pure Art and Music
Classroom art and music provides the basic skills to understand and enjoy these activities. Art classes are provided for grades 1 - 2. Music is provided per classroom.
Conferences
Teacher/Parent conferences are held at the end of the first nine weeks, second nine weeks and in the spring. It is required that a parent attend these conferences. Unscheduled conferences may be held upon request of the teacher or parents throughout the year.
Hours
School hours are from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Late stay is available from 2:30 to 5:45, with a study hall.
Attendance
Attendance is recorded on a 180-day basis. A student must be in class half the day to be counted as present.
Arrivals and Dismissals
Arrivals: Students arriving between 7:30 am and 8:00 am should enter through the front door of the appropriate building and report to the designated room until they are taken to their own classroom. Those arriving after 8:00 am can go directly to their classroom. Parking is available in the front of the school at street level or at the rear of the school buildings.
Dismissals: When picking up your child at 2:30 pm, the gates will be opened behind the school for you to drive through and we will help your child into the car. Parents or caregivers must enter the building to pick up students if leaving at any other time.
Lunches and Snacks
Lunches are to be provided by the students. Lunch boxes should be clearly marked with the student's name and should include napkins and any utensils needed. Hot sandwiches, chips and milk are available for purchase and lunches from home can be heated in the microwave. All heated lunches should be provided in a microwavable container and any tops removed from heatables.
